New to Counseling? What to Expect

Starting something new can be scary; that’s why we will review policies at the beginning of your first appointment and take the time to answer your questions. The most important thing in treatment is to feel comfortable, empowered, and safe. In your first session, we will work together to understand what you are experiencing and what you want to work toward.

Treatment Plan

The treatment plan is your roadmap to achieving your goals. This helps us know what steps to take and keep treatment focused on what you need to reach them.

Treatment is recommended weekly for those in the beginning stages of counseling to create a firm foundation to reach goals. Research shows that when clients attend weekly for the first 30 days, achieve more results than those who did not consistently participate. Practicing skills between sessions is also an important factor in treatment success. Biweekly or monthly sessions may be available for maintaining change once goals are reached.

Session Structure

We will discuss your unique treatment needs in the first session to make sure that our time together is best tailored to you. Typically, sessions could include checking in on life stressors, or choosing goal to focus on for the week. By the end of the session you will have deeper insight into what you are experiencing and have practical tools to use to help you progress toward goals. Sometimes clients have a lot to process between sessions; that’s okay. It is your time you can use it how you like. If you are a person who likes homework, or journaling, let’s work that into your treatment.
